The students are navigating the classroom systems with ease now. We welcome Signe to our program as a math/science specialist! We are very happy to have this excellent teacher join our program. We have many exciting projects planned for this year.

This year, I plan to stress organization in student planning, classroom systems and daily activities.

Parents: you can help your child by using his/her planner for appointments (doctor, sports, etc.) and family plans, too. The more we reinforce using planners, the more organized your child will be!

Homework will go out on Thursdays, beginning Thursday, September 11. Please refer to the homework section of the blog for weekly/daily homework assignments.

Social Studies, History and Geography Overview

2008-09 Social Studies Curriculum

We will be studying world cultures this year. Our study has begun with atlas and map reading skills, cardinal directions, measuring the earth and the fundamental needs of humans.

We used a tangelo as earth. We drew on the continents and then cut lines of longitude toward the equator. After peeling the surface from the core, we laid the peel flat and discovered how some maps are drawn. That is why Greenland looks bigger than Africa on many maps!

We will explore early human migration and then begin studying ancient civilizations.

Helen K. and Sue will be coordinating many hands-on art projects in our social studies and geography work.
